When asked to describe the poetry chapbook form to a (musician) friend, I thought about the analogy of the EP versus the album. Both smaller collections of pieces (poems, songs), the EP and the chapbook typically coalesce around a central idea or aesthetic.
We were talking about chapbooks because, this week, I launched my first “EP” of 22 poems through Emergency Flash Mob Press.
What’s The Collection About?
Here on our home planet, we walk with sure steps, held firmly to the soil. We maintain our strength with the constant force of gravity.
Off planet, Earth’s gravity still exists, but the force is minute. This “microgravity” provides the delightful weightlessness that we see in videos of slowly bouncing astronauts, floating from one tether to another. But days spent in microgravity takes its toll over time: physical breakdown of the body through bone loss, weakened heart, etc.
“Days in Microgravity” explores the thoughts and emotions around changing family relationships that persist – the grief of losing what once was, the eventual acceptance of what never was, and the hope that still remains after the snow globe settles.
